such a position is absurd. One of the Assistante might be a fairly senior officer: the other ought unquestionably to be quite a junior officer, (3) A staff of 3 Auditors and a highly paid European

clerk is excessive as compared with the staff of other Colonies (see my despatch of 28th February,

1921).

4.

I suggest (a) that the Coloniel Auditor be

relieved of all outside work, (b) that the staff be reduced

to a total of three by the excision either of one of the

Assistant Auditors or of the European clerk and (c) that the Assistant or Assistants be officers of much less

seniority in the department. If these alterations are made, I shall be ready to agree to an increase in the salary of the Auditor. The salary of £620 to £800 will be ample for Assistants of less seniority than the existing holders of

the posts.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient humble servant,

7.2. Stubbs

Governor, &c.
